Exploring China Through Song

How does a soprano from Michigan become the leading Western interpreter of contemporary Chinese vocal repertoire? Juliet Petrus discusses her journey into Chinese music and language and the opportunities it has brought to connect the two cultures through music. Since her first involvement with the iSING! International Young Artist Festival in China, performance of Chinese music in China and around the world has become her passion. The recent co-author of Singing in Mandarin: A Guide to Chinese Lyric Diction and Vocal Repertoire, (Rowman and Littlefield, 2020), she hopes that the book will allow more accessibility to the beautiful music of China, inspiring teachers and students to explore the repertoire which has become so dear to her. She will give a brief overview of material covered within the book, including excerpts from her CD of Chinese and American Art Songs, A Great Distance.
American and Italian soprano, Juliet Petrus, is recognized for her effortless coloratura and is steadily making her mark as a versatile and captivating performer in the world of recital, concert and opera. Ms. Petrus is in high demand in the United States and China as the leading Western interpreter of contemporary Chinese vocal music. She is a founding member of the Collaborative Arts Institute of Chicago, devoted to the education and performance of art song.
