MaryJean Allen is a certified Alexander Technique and Body Mapping teacher and co-author of the Body Mapping book for singers: What Every Singer Needs to Know About the Body. In her workshop with the Chicago Chapter of NATS, she will explore the Alexander Technique which is over 100 years old, and is taught worldwide. It is a simple and practical method for improving ease and freedom of movement, balance, support and coordination. It is not a series of treatments or exercises, but rather a re-education of the mind and body. Alexander Technique teaches everyone how to become aware of and how to eliminate habits that interfere with fluid, free movement. Alexander Technique students learn how to pause and choose a better way of moving, thereby improving alignment, tone quality, breathing, and expressiveness. Always with a student's permission, Alexander Technique teachers use spoken word and also sometimes very gently and lightly guides a student's head, torso, arms, legs, or feet in order to teach students how to move, breathe, sing, and perform with greater lightness and ease.
