Kenneth Bozeman: Acoustic Pedagogy
Bastian Voice Institute and Chicago Chapter NATS present a workshop on Saturday, October 1, 2016 from 8:30am-5:00pm with experienced pedagogue and researcher, Kenneth Bozeman, author of "Practical Vocal Acoustics." In this workshop, Prof. Bozeman will explain and demonstrate how understanding acoustic pedagogy can transform the effectiveness of studio or choral training, as well as provide a basis for improving clinical therapies. He specializes in making voice acoustics clear and accessible. Attendees will have an opportunity to explore these principles in their own voices and observe their application in other participants.
Online registration and payment deadline is Sunday, September 11, 2016. After registering online, please make your payment to Bastian Voice Institute via phone or by mail.
Membership in NATS is not required. Workshop registration is open to Speech Pathologists, non-NATS members, students and the general public.
8:30am Registration and Light Breakfast
9:00-10:45am Session I: The Vocal Acoustic Landscape
This session will explain the contributions of vocal fold vibration and vocal tract resonation, and the effects of their interactions (acoustic registers, open and close timbre; yell and whoop coupling; turning over, active and passive vowel modification). These interactions will be illustrated with a voice synthesizer, instructor demonstrations, and group explorations. Session I will also explain the necessity of acoustic non-linearity to Western classical singing through open throated, chiaroscuro, convergent resonator shaping.
11:00-11:45am: Session IA: Effective Techniques for Open Throat
Demonstration and exploration of pre-phonatory tuning techniques for establishing an open throated, convergent resonator.
11:45-12:00pm Q & A
12:00-1:00pm Lunch (Provided)
*Please notify BVI of Food Allergies
1:00-2:45pm Session II: Male Passagio Training
This session will explore the crucial acoustic events of the male zona di passaggio (harmonic/formant crossings and couplings) and demonstrate effective strategies for negotiat-ing this transitional area. It will train participant awareness of timbral events, and explain and demonstrate necessary differences in strategy between vowels. (Participant volunteers needed).
3:00-4:30pm Session III:Treble Voice Acoustic Strategy
This session will demonstrate the acoustic similarities and differences between training treble and non-treble voices. Resonance strategies for the treble middle voice and upper voice by vowel will be explored, and effective strategies for using acoustic pedagogy to meet the challenges of range development will be demonstrated. (Participant volunteers needed).
